ABOUT THE ACUPUNCTURIST
Brianna Viens, Dipl.Ac, M.Ac, L.Ac, ADS
Brianna earned her bachelor’s degree in Humanities from the University of Maryland University College intending to pursue a career where she could work intimately with others in a healthcare setting. With the forethought that she would go on to study her Master’s in Acupuncture, Brianna focused a large part of her undergrad studying Eastern Philosophy. Her studies in Eastern Philosophy provided a strong foundation for her to begin studying Acupuncture, as Chinese Medicine is applied Chinese Philosophy.
Her interest in Chinese Medicine began when she had her first experience with Acupuncture as a patient in 2010. She experienced Acupuncture as a life-changing intervention, which allowed her to work through a difficult past, overcome chronic depression and anxiety, and resolve various physical symptoms that she had dealt with for many years. With a renewed feeling of well-being, Brianna began her path to helping others by pursuing Massage Therapy. She graduated from Baltimore School of Massage in 2012, received her license to practice in the state of Maryland and became nationally Board Certified in Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (BCTMB). Brianna then began working with Chiropractors certified in Advanced Biophysics and Medical Doctors specializing in muscular and joint pain relief therapies. She became specialized in trigger point therapy, neuromuscular therapy, acupressure, deep tissue and became a Certified Integrative Reflexologist. Later she went into private practice for herself when she decided to return to school to finish her undergraduate degree, which she completed in 2015.
In 2016, Brianna began an Acupuncture program at Maryland University of Integrative Health (MUIH), formerly known as Tai Sophia Institute and Traditional Acupuncture Institute, which was the first accredited acupuncture program in the United States. She received her Master of Acupuncture (M.Ac) in 2019 after completing more than 2,300 hours of combined theoretical studies and clinical application. Part of her training included three years of Healing Presence classes and intensives through MUIH’s School of Philosophy Healing in Action (SOPHIA) program. This training has provided her the ability to work with individuals with a great level of respect, honor, and care that allows for deep healing. Additionally, she has worked privately with field scholar, Dr. Heming Zhu, learning advanced treatment techniques.
Brianna practices two styles of Acupuncture: Classical Five Element and Traditional Chinese Medicine. While Traditional Chinese Medicine is more Westernized in its approach to treating patterns of disharmony, Classical Five Element Acupuncture aims to treat the whole person constitutionally and holistically with a Body-Mind-Spirit approach. Both of these styles of Acupuncture address pain and disease by restoring the normal flow of energy (known as qi/“chee”) in the body and aim to treat the root problem.
Brianna is a Diplomate of Acupuncture, nationally board certified by the NCCAOM, and is licensed to practice Acupuncture in the state of Maryland. She is also an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist (ADS), trained in the NADA protocol to work with Substance Use Disorders. She spent a significant portion of her clinical internship working with patients in addiction centers in Maryland. Brianna is a member of the Maryland Acupuncture Society and the American Society of Acupuncturists. In October 2019, she was recognized as a Top Acupuncturist representing Columbia, Maryland by Women in Medicine.
Her areas of specialty include addiction, anxiety, arthritis, back pain, chronic fatigue syndrome, chronic pain, depression, digestive disorders, headaches, insomnia, weight management, infertility, and women’s health. She also specializes in Eight Extraordinary treatments, aimed at treating psycho-emotional pain and habituated patterns of behavior, as well as difficult to treat conditions and chronic disease.
