Mother Roasting - What is it?

Updated: Nov 17, 2019

Mother Roasting is a Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment for new mothers that is typically done about four or five days after childbirth, as well as in the weeks following postpartum recovery. Moxibustion means "burning herb" and it comes the herb Mugwort, usually referred to as "Moxa". Moxa is used by applying the herb to the lower abdomen and back with heat to help restore the Qi (energy) and blood that is lost through childbirth. Sessions can be 30-45 minutes in length of applying this warming herb to re-vitalize a new mother.

It is well known in Chinese Medicine that childbirth and pregnancy really depletes the reservoirs of Qi and blood. This is commonly why women suffer with chronic fatigue and postpartum depression after childbirth. It can also cause a wide range of health issues, such as insomnia, anemia, prolapse, and insufficient lactation. Energy channels, also called meridians, open during childbirth, making them vulnerable to the elements (heat, cold, damp and wind, etc.), which can contribute to health issues. The warmth from Mother Roasting can help to dramatically improve the recovery period after birth, by building Qi and blood and moving any of the elements that cause disease. The result is a much quicker postpartum recovery and a restored sense of vitality!
